Last week, I was invited to be a contender in the cocktail olympics held at Double Dogs in Sylvan Heights. The event benefitted the Nashville Humane Association, so when they asked me to be a part of it, I immediately jumped at the opportunity. Myself, along with 2 other local business owners, were staged to compete against each other by concocting cocktails judged by a panel of local Nashville celebrities. We each had to mix up 3 drinks: 1 with vodka, 1 with whiskey, and 1 with beer. Each cocktail had to also have its own canine inspired name, created by us.

Fortunately for me, the 3 of us competitors were partnered with Double Dogs bartenders that could help us craft the cocktails. The first round of the competition was the vodka round. We created:

The Blue Heeler

  • 1 part Tito’s vodka
  • 1 part blue Curaçao
  • 1 part ginger beer
  • muddled lime
  • garnish with pineapple and cherry

The second round was the whiskey round, and we created something that I was particularly a huge fan of. I also give myself a lot of credit for the extra clever name. ;]

The Noble Shih Tzu

  • 1 part Jack Daniel’s whiskey
  • 1 part tonic
  • Splash of orange juice
  • pineapple-jalapeño simple syrup
  • cayenne pepper rim with lime garnish

The third and final round was the beer round. We were given Stiegl grapefruit beer to use in the cocktail.

Breakfast at Toto’s

    • 2 parts Stiegl grapefruit beer
    • 1 part champagne
    • muddled raspberries and mint,
    • strawberry, mint, lemon twist garnish

Towards the end of the competition, we made tiny versions of our cocktails so that customers could come up and donate to taste our creations. All donations went directly to the Nashville Humane Association.

The cocktail olympics were a blast. I had so much fun being a part of something that was for a great cause and the staff at Double Dogs were so wonderful.
After the judges tallied their scores, they gave out medals. I received bronze, which was still a win in my book (even though it was technically last place) because I really had no idea what I was doing. All in all, it was really fun to pretend to be a bartender for the evening while raising money for the Nashville Humane Association. cocktail12

I was recently invited to come out to taste and preview the upcoming cold brew that will be released at Dunkin’ Donuts as of August 1st. It was held at the location on Elliston Place in Midtown on Thursday evening. As you can imagine, when I received an email asking if I’d like to come out with a P.S. that asked “What’s your favorite kind of donut?” it was a no-brainer. They were speaking directly to my heart and my stomach.

The cold brew at Dunkin’ Donuts is delicious. The difference between a regular iced coffee and a cold brew is that a cold brew is made over a gradual process, steeped in cold water (kind of like sun tea), in a process which results in a richer and stronger taste. It’s perfect for hot days in Middle Tennessee.

I was spoiled with an adorable gift basket filled with all kinds of goodies: a travel cup, a coffee mug, Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, gift cards, and a t-shirt. They also gave us their brand new key lime square donuts. Ohmygosh, yum.

Being a part of the Nashville Food Bloggers network has been such a positive connection to the entire Nashville community. It’s great to be able to attend events like this and to meet like-minded people. I’m happy to be a part of it. If you’re a fellow blogger in a different city, I’d highly recommend joining a blogging network where you can interact with and meet up with others in your city.

Last Thursday I was invited, along with other Nashville bloggers, to come out to the brand new Double Dogs location in Sylvan Heights. We got a sneak peek of their upcoming menu items and got to taste all kinds of delicious appetizers and entrées along with having the distinct pleasure of drinking from their open bar.

I brought my friend Trisha along as my +1 and she managed to snap a photo of me in my blogger element, a photo of me taking a photo of food, how meta. We sampled a little bit of everything they had on display, which worked out perfectly because there’s no way we would have been able to just choose one menu item. Everything looked delicious and everything was delicious!

My favorite dish was the homemade chicken pot pie, which is served as an iron skillet filled with a golden brown pastry shell that’s stuffed with piping hot chicken, fresh vegetables and a rich cream sauce.. I’m such a sucker for southern comfort foods, and this was one of the best dishes I’ve tasted in a long time. I probably could’ve eaten the whole thing, but opted for trying more than one thing and not hogging all of the pot pie. I’m telling you, you HAVE to go here and try their pot pie ASAP!

The service at the event was incredible. Every staff member that came by to check on us was attentive, polite, and very friendly. They even offered Trisha and I beer samples to find out which we’d like to go with our food. The managers, trainers, wait staff, and bartenders were top-notch with their customer service. I cannot wait to go back with my husband and enjoy their patio and watch football on their TVs.
